It’s so gorgeous from hole to hole that it’s hard to concentrate sometimes on what you’re really doing because all you want to do is look at the beauty.

Aggie's Dream

For Ellis Maples, this stunning mountain was a natural canvas to showcase his talent. As he stated in a letter dated 1965, “The magnificent scenery afforded by the west slope of Grandfather Mountain as it towers above the Linville River Valley provides a golf setting that is unequalled in North Carolina. Tremendous trees line the fairways, and the lake, streams, and topography afford opportunities for a great variety of interesting golf holes.”

Golf World calls the walkable mountain course, 'the most beautiful and certainly one of the best courses in the country.'

Certainly, his vision came to fruition. Members have unlimited access to 36 holes through the Championship Course and Mountain Springs executive course, along with a practice range to perfect their game.

Ellis Maples' Masterpiece

Golf Digest recognized Grandfather Golf and Country Club on its list of America’s 100 Greatest Courses for 2013-2014.  The Club’s inclusion in the publication’s “Best In State” ranking for 2013-2014 was also announced. In 2016 the Championship Course was ranked on Golfweek's Top 100 Modern Golf Courses. And, in 2014, 2015 and 2016 the Championship Course was recognized as the top golf course in North Carolina’s mountains and second in the state by Business North Carolina.

While championship tees feature 7,010 yards for a par of 72, the picturesque Championship Golf Course includes subtle breaks and allows players of all handicaps to select a challenging round at any of Grandfather’s six tee positions. As planned, each unique hole is its own signature, surrounded by native streams and other natural wonders. Each hole is designed to flow seamlessly while concealing each hole from the next with a screen of lush rhododendron and towering hemlocks.

Governed by USGA rules, Grandfather’s golf events are carefully scheduled to maximize enjoyment and access by members and their guests.
